The philosophical issue with maximizing (or simply: optimizing) anything is that it implies economization. The foundation of economic thinking is rationalization, in the sense of making things countable and objectively comparable. It is assigning a value to every thing, and expecting this value to be universally acknowledged. This is invalid.
The value of things is entangled with perception, which in turn is entangled with culture, values and lived experience. To think economically is to think too simply. Therefore, approaching lifestyle decisions economically rather than idiosyncratically seems to be a way to get what society deems valuable at best – it is, however, unsuited to lead to interesting results or make you happy.
